NEW CASTLE TWP., Pa. -

A 78-year-old woman was killed Tuesday in a crash in Schuylkill County.

The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Route 61 at Darkwater Road in New Castle Township.

A car driven by Edith Lescavage, of Minersville, tried to turn onto Route 61 from Darkwater Road, but she didn't yield to oncoming traffic, police said.

Lescavage's car was hit broadside on the driver's side by a pickup truck driven by Vicki Hesse, 43, of Port Carbon, police said.

Lescavage died of her injuries, police said; a passenger in her car, Florence Doyle, 80, of Minersville, was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Hesse was also taken to the hospital for treatment, but officials had no information about the surviving victims' extent of injuries.
