Thursday morning's snow caused traffic accidents on slippery roads  throughout the region.

Portions of both Interstate 78 and the east-west Pennsylvania Turnpike were closed because of accidents, causing major traffic tie-ups.

Both westbound lanes of the turnpike were closed because of an accident that occurred at 9:14 a.m. at milepost 289.3, between Morgantown and Reading.

Traffic was being detoured off the toll road.

Another accident was reported on the turnpike's Northeast Extension, in the northbound lanes at Milepost 100.7 between the Pocono and Wilkes-Barre interchanges. Traffic was reported moving, but at reduced speeds.

"Drivers should avoid Interstate 78 if possible," warned the Berks County Communications Center, which reported eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed between mileposts  35 and 40.  The communications center said the westbound side of the highway also was closed around milepost 40.

A multi-vehicle accident was reported in westbound lanes of I-78 near milepost 38 in Greenwich Twp., Berks County.

In Lehigh County, westbound I-78 was closed at the Route 100 intersection "for an indefinite time" because of accidents, reported that county's communications center.

That accident was cleared and the highway reopened at Route 100 by 1:30 p.m., but I-78 remained closed farther west in Berks County.

A tractor-trailer and up to four cars may have been involved in a crash on Route 22 between Cedar Crest Boulevard and Route 309 in South Whitehall Twp., Lehigh County. Initial reports from state police are that people were injured in that accident.

There are several reports of vehicles off the road because of snow on Route 222 near Route 183 in Bern Township, Berks County,

The Monroe County Communications Center is reporting snow causing hazardous driving conditions in several areas of the county Thursday morning.

An accident that may have been weather-related slowed traffic in on Route 196 near Echo Lake Road in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County.
