JIM THORPE, Pa. -

The officer taken hostage by a sheriff's deputy who shot and killed himself tried to stop the suicide, according to the Carbon County Sheriff.

Sheriff Dwight Nothstein said Lansford officer Chris Ondrus was taken hostage by one of his deputies, David Midas, who also served on the Lansford Police Department.

During the incident, Midas shot and killed himself in downtown Jim Thorpe Friday night. Nothstein says Ondrus tried to get the gun away from Midas.

Nothstein said the department is offering counseling for other deputies.

69 News spoke with people who know both officers. They said they were not aware of any tensions that may have existed between the two men.
