EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -

Thirty-five-year-old Darrell Tyree of East Stroudsburg died early Monday when the car in which he was a passenger crossed Route 209 and struck a business and then a boulder.

The accident occurred at 12:10 a.m. Monday on Route 209 --also known as Milford Road -- near Eagle Valley Mall in East Stroudsburg.

The 2001 Volkwagen GTI in which Tyree was a passenger was traveling south on that highway when it crossed the road, struck a business at 748 Milford Road and continued on to smash into the boulder.

Route 209 was closed for over eight hours following the accident.

Tyree, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Pocono Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:27 a.m.  Monday.

The driver, Ronald Possinger, 21, of Stroudsburg, also was taken to Pocono Medical Center. Police did not have an update on his condition.

Possinger was out of the car when police arrived, but it was unclear if he was ejected or crawled out of the wreckage on his own.

Stroud Area Regional Police don't know why the car crossed the highway. But they said speed definitely was a factor and are looking into whether alcohol was involved.

The police department's accident reconstruction team is continuing its investigation, reported Lt. Brian Kimmins.
