Pocono Mountain East High School mourns death of football player
The Pocono Mountain East High School community is mourning the death of one of its football players.
Steve Dienno died Friday night from injuries associated with a car crash he was involved in back on Sept. 24.
Dienno's stepfather, Greg Harris, posted the following statement Saturday on the high school Gridiron Club Facebook page: "He fought very hard for the last six weeks but his injuries were just too much for anyone to overcome. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for Steven during this horrible time."
Officials say Dienno was driving when he lost control of the car, causing it to go airborne and hit two trees before splitting in half.
State police believe speed played a role in the wreck.
Two passengers were in the car with Dienno, including teammate Justin Bullock, who sustained critical injuries in the wreck.
A recent posting on the Gridiron Club web site by Bullock's family gave an update on his recovery. The family says he is undergoing physical therapy. "The support is overwhelming and want that to be felt in a positive way."
A benefit for the victims' families is planned for Nov. 21 at Big Daddy's Family BBQ in Bartonsville.
