The Yuengling name has long been synonymous with beer, but many may be unaware that the family business once thrived on ice cream.
Now, a branch of the Yuengling family is planning to churn out 10 flavors of its storied ice cream brand in early 2014, restoring the frozen treat to store shelves for the first time in 30 years.
"We are extremely proud to be reintroducing such a beloved product," said David Yuengling, president of Yuengling's Ice Cream, which is unaffiliated with the brewery. "Started by my great grandfather, Frank D. Yuengling during Prohibition, our ice cream brand is steeped in history. We plan to build on the family legacy, maintaining the highest standards of quality and value."
In addition to the traditional chocolate and vanilla, the 10 all-natural flavors of ice cream will include black and tan (chocolate and caramel), vanilla fudge chunk with pretzels, root beer float, mint chocolate chip and chocolate fudge brownie.
The ice cream will be sold in grocery stores throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey by next March, bringing to life a long-held dream of both David Yuengling and Rob Bohorad, the company's chief operating officer, who grew up with the Yuenglings.
"For years, people have been asking me to bring back Yuengling's Ice Cream," said Yuengling. "After 30 years in corporate America, I wanted to pursue something entrepreneurial and also make a difference in people's lives. It's something I've always wanted to do, and I couldn't be happier about carrying on the family tradition."
"David and I complement each other nicely and have similar values. And, it doesn't hurt that we both love ice cream," Bohorad said.
The former ice cream and dairy plant, located across the street from the brewery in Pottsville, was founded in 1920 and remained opened until 1985. The vacant building at 5th and Mahantongo streets still stands.
