LEHIGHTON, Pa. -

A bridge rehabilitation project is crippling traffic along Route 209 in Carbon County.

A new traffic pattern is now in place at the Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge. On Friday, the southbound lanes were closed, with southbound traffic being detoured on Canal and Bridge streets. One northbound lanes remained open, PennDOT said.

This phase of the project is estimated to be completed in September. DOT said it will provide an update when traffic patterns change again.

The $11.8 million rehabilitation project -- which includes work in Franklin Township, Lehighton and Weissport -- is estimated to be completed in May 2015.

The project involves bridge deck repairs; replacing of deck joints, back-walls and steel bearings; concrete and steel repairs; and removing and replacing a pier.
