The owner of the building tells us the fire started when a tenant fell asleep while smoking in bed. Investigators say they've heard that as a possible cause of the fire.. but are still working to confirm it.

While some were able to get out the easy way, two residents had to make a life or death decision. They escaped the flames but didn't get away unharmed.

The fire started in a lower level apartment unit according to East Stroudsburg fire chief Bryan Wallie.

The next step for many residents: Figuring out how to start over.  There's no word on the conditions of the three people who were hurt. Friends have started a fundraiser for the victims.
