Jim Thorpe appeals to keep Jim Thorpe
Borough appeals moving body in federal court
The borough of Jim Thorpe filed a court appeal Monday to keep the remains of the famous athlete in town.
In May, borough council voted to appeal a U.S. District Court judge's ruling that the body of the late athlete should be moved to an Indian burial ground in his native Oklahoma.
Monday was the deadline to file that appeal in federal court.
Borough officials said the appeal will cost less than complying with the judge's order.
Thorpe's body has been entombed since 1954 in the town, which even changed its name from Mauch Chunk to honor him.
Thorpe's sons sued to have it moved in 2010.
