When it comes to handling the high temperatures, one local roofing company has a plan B.

Pete Niven, vice president of Berks County-based Bachman's Roofing, said his workers are relieved to have completed their most recent project.

"It's not too safe to be up in that temperature," said Niven. "You got to be real careful with how you walk on the shingles so you're not ripping them up."

Niven said temperatures on roofs can be up to 30 degrees warmer, so his team makes sure it gets an early start on the day in order to beat the heat.

"We like to get to a job before 7:00, if possible, as long as it's alright with the home owners," said Niven, who added that, in the past, they have waited for the temperature to drop around 4:00 in the afternoon.

Niven said he drinks up to a gallon and a half of water in order to stay hydrated in the heat. As much as staying hydrated is crucial, Niven said that is just one of the tips he has to stay cool.

"Real light breakfast, light food, fruits are always good for you," said Niven. "Try not to eat a lot of mayonnaise or stuff that's going to make you feel sick."

In the heat, Bachman's Roofing works on three projects a day, at most. If workers feel lightheaded, Niven said they are required to take breaks and hydrate.

"It's hot," said Niven. "You try and stay hydrated as best as you can, and try to be as safe as possible."
