School officials ready to close 2 elementary schools
Wilson administrators: Close elementary schools
It's not a done deal, but Monday night the Wilson school district announced it is one step closer to closing two elementary schools.
The Wilson school district for months has held public meetings laying four options on the table about the future of the elementary schools. Monday the administration settled on one.
Parents, staff and students learned the administration is recommending Lincoln Park and West Wyomissing elementary schools be closed.
For third grader Grace Piscitelli it could mean she'll start fourth grade at a different school.
"I always get shy on the first day of school. In kindergarten I got really shy," said Grace, "It will kind of be a like a relap of Kindergarten."
Her dad, John Piscitelli said he's not surprised.
"We saw the writing on the wall," said Piscitelli, "We knew probably they would be closing the buildings; just a matter of how they wanted to handle the redistricting and everything else that had to go along with it."
Superintendent Dr. Rudy Ruth recommendedspending $4 million on the three remaining schools.
"Our recommendation at this time, what we feel is the best thing to do, is take Green Valley Elementary, Shiloh Hills Elementary and Spring Ridge Elementary and add four classrooms-- two on the bottom floor and two on the top-- to each of those schools, so that we have 20 classrooms at all five of our schools."
He said next year Lincoln Park students will attend Shiloh Hills, and most of the West Wyomissing students will attend Spring Ridge.
"It's nice to be able to walk the kids to school in the morning and not having to worry about buses or anything like that," said West Wyomissing Elementary parent Matt Weller.
Many West Wyomissing Elementary parents said they don't like the change.
"I'm upset. I'm upset with the decision that they're making," said Jamie Burns.
"Two of the highest tested schools and they're willing to throw it away," said Chad Burns, "I don't understand. They want to keep raising my taxes, but this is what they do."
Students at other elementary schools would also be affected by the redistricting plan.
There will be meetings at each school in the coming weeks. The board will vote on this recommendation on March 12.
