Sears plans to close up to 120 stores
Sears to close up to 120 stores
Up to 120 Sears and Kmart stores could be closing their doors for good, and it turns out the holiday shopping season may to blame.
"It's going to be devastating," said Cynthia Quirindongo from Reading. "But what can I say?"
In an internal memo Tuesday, CEO and President Lou D'Ambrosio said the retailer had "not generated the results we were seeking during the holiday."
According to a Sears Holdings press release, the company explained, "While our past practice has been to keep marginally performing stores open while we worked to improve their performance, we no longer believe that to be the appropriate action in this environment."
Officials said sales at stores open at least a year, a closely watched retail measure known as same-store sales, tumbled 5.2 percent in the eight weeks ended on Christmas Day. That came from a 4.4 percent drop in sales at Kmart stores and a 6 percent slide in sales at domestic Sears stores.
Executives have not announced which stores will close, nor when they are scheduled to close.
Some shoppers in Muhlenberg Township said they will miss the low prices.
"Kmart and Sears is like one of the No.1 spots, cheaper spots, too," said Gordon.
Retail analysts say rival department stores like Macy's and Target continue to steal customers.
Walmart, the world's largest retailer, has also brought back services like layaway for financially-strapped shoppers during the holiday season.
And then there are the online shopping outlets like Amazon.
"Amazon is good. But then you got to get out of your house a little bit," said Gordon. "I mean I'm more the type that likes to go out and shop."
And that's the attitude Sears Holdings Corporation is hoping will keep its stores up and running for good.
