Sinkhole repairs to take longer than expected

READING, Pa. -

Some residents in Reading are hoping a sinkhole does not sink their holiday spirit.

"It's going to an inconvenience for the holidays," said James Page.

Page lives in the 100 block of Walnut Street in Reading, where a sinkhole has left the street impassable to traffic and barely passable for foot traffic.

"They said they weren't going to tear up our sidewalks. They tore up our sidewalks and everything," said Page.

The sinkhole initially opened in January but was stabilized.

But the heavy rains from Tropical Storm Lee ripped the street apart in September.

Officials said repairs would take around two months. But two months have come and gone, and repairs are still under way.

Charlie Jones, director of Public Works, said since several utility companies in the area have either pipes, wires or materials running through the intersection, repairs have been complicated.

"They all had substantial work to do. And it's just taking much, much longer," said Jones.

Authorities said Met-Ed, alone, reported it still has at least eight weeks of repairs to complete, and then there's restoration work.

"There's curb work. There's sidewalk work," said Jones.

So when relatives start stopping by Walnut Street for the holidays, many hope the sinkhole does not sink their holiday plans.

"It's just one block, but you know it's a lot of people," said Page.

Officials said repairs should be completed by mid-Spring.
