Students decorate tree with donations for deputy's pregnant widow
Students donate baby clothes, toys to sheriff deputy's widow
The pregnant widow of a fallen sheriff's deputy received a special gift from some young students on Monday.
It's been nearly six months since Berks County Sheriff's Deputy Kyle Pagerly lost his life while serving a warrant.
Ever since, his widow, Alecia Pagerly, said the outpouring of support from the community has helped her cope with the tragedy.
"I don't think I, I don't know what I would have done without the support," said Pagerly.
Before Kyle was killed, the couple learned Alecia was pregnant with their first child, a girl. She is due to be born in late January.
When the Amity Intermediate Center's principal and teachers found out Alecia was pregnant, they not only wanted to help, but so did the students.
"We really felt as though we should find a way to address what happened this summer with the kids in a touching kind of way," said Amy Hicks, a 4th grade teacher.
The school's principal, Mary Beth Torchia, said they decided to collect baby clothes, toys and other items for Alecia's baby and items for Kyle's K-9 partner, Jynx.
"We try to teach at the holidays, it's not about Santa Claus, it's about giving," said Torchia.
"I'm just so overwhelmed," said Pagerly. "I think she'll be dressed for the first year of her life from this."
For the past four years, Kyle and Jynx came to Amity Intermediate to talk with 4th graders during the school's career month.
"Kyle absolutely loved when he got to bring Jynx to elementary schools and teach kids," said Pagerly.
The 4th graders created a giant card for Alecia. A scrapbook was created by the 5th grade students for her baby with pictures of Kyle and Jynx.
"I just feel so blessed I got to marry Kyle, who was this amazing man, and that many people care about his baby and being taken care of," said Pagerly.
