Be prepared before thunderstorms arrive
There have been many severe thunderstorms this summer and more are in the forecast. The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley wants to make sure you're prepared.
Before the storm, make sure you have an emergency preparedness kit, including a flashlight (which you should have by your side, not under your bed or in a cabinet), radio, batteries, water, non-perishable food, cash, and your cell phone and its charger.
Bring in or secure patio furniture and get in a safe place away from windows or sliding glass doors.
During the storm, stay indoors and listen to the forecast. If you hear thunder, you're close enough to get struck by lightning.
After there's been a thunderstorm, stay indoors until you know it's over. Once it's safe to go outside, don't drive through flooded roadways, and stay away from downed power lines.
If you lose power, report it to your power company.
Make sure to turn off light switches and be sure to turn off your stove or oven if you were cooking when you lost power.
Keep your refrigerator or freezer closed as much as possible and be careful if using candles or generators.
