Supplements bad for your health?
Red wine and fish may make a nice pairing at dinner, but two new studies say they may actually be harmful to your health.
Your mom probably told you to eat your fish. It's "brain food," after all.
"It has been shown to help with cardiovascular disease and even Alzheimer's disease," said Dr. Angelo Baccala, Lehigh Valley Hospital Network's urology chief.
But a surprising new study says Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish could actually lead to cancer. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute study found a 43 percent higher rate of prostate cancer for men with high levels of Omega-3s.
Baccala says don't jump to conclusions yet.
"It doesn't necessarily show cause and effect, and so we can't necessarily say that it's bad for you," he said.
Baccala said the study did not look at participants' diets, but it does raise questions about popular fish oil supplements.
"There may be a difference between the fatty acids in natural foods versus what's in supplements," he said.
Enjoy a glass of wine with your fish? Another new study says the antioxidants in red grapes may not be as beneficial as you thought.
"You don't drink alcohol for medicinal benefit, but one glass of wine wouldn't hurt," said LVHN cardiologist Dr. Andrew Sumner.
A small European study says red grapes may actually erase the benefits of exercise, at least in older men. But Sumner believes there is still benefit from eating fresh fruits.
"It's really important that they eat a healthy diet far more than taking additional pills," he said.
