The search for generators to brave the storm
Friday night, managers said there were no generators in the Lehigh Valley. But word came that Cabela's was getting a shipment, and shoppers camped out!
People showed up around 4 am, four hours before the store opened.
The line of cars at Cabela's, in Hamburg, Berks County were all picking up one thing...generators.
"Most of these generators can operate your freezer, your , refrigerator, sump pump," said Harold Luther, retail coordinator at Cabela's.
"I'm afraid my electric will go out, so I have a sump pump in my cellar I've got to keep going," Gilbertsville resident Barry Stark said.
"Came out to buy it as a precaution for sump pumps. Any water and power outages make the sump pump fail and have the water come in the basement," added Sal Abboud, from Philadelphia.
Because of Hurricane Irene, Cabela's lowered the price of the generators by $180 dollars due to public need.
"The local demand for generators has been crazy the last three days. On Thursday and Friday we sold over 150 generators alone," Luther said.
On Saturday, the store sold 700.
Four trucks came from various locations across the nation.
But the generators weren't put on the store floor because they didn't want customers fighting over an item they couldn't find.
I tried all the hardware stores, Lowe's, Home Depot, etcetera, heard that they were getting a shipment here and made the run, an hour plus drive to get here are pick it up," Abboud said.
"There is none within 150 miles," Stark added.
