State troopers shot and killed a 5- to 6-foot-long alligator found at a reservoir, officials said.
Police in Northumberland County say they were called to the Sunbury Reservoir in Upper Augusta Township on Friday morning after the animal was sighted.
Troopers said the Fish and Boat Commission declined to send anyone and said the animal should be disposed of if it posed a possible threat.
Police said they also had no luck finding local animal handlers.
So, troopers ended up shooting the creature in the interests of public safety.
Troopers issued a reminder that exotic animals such as young alligators and boa constrictors can become a hazard to owners ill-equipped to handle them.
They said "depositing such animals in publicly accessible areas then endangers the public."
