(CNN) -- Chicago Public Schools will close or consolidate 53 schools and one program to redirect funds into the system's "Welcoming Schools" modernization initiative, the district announced Thursday. The money will be invested into resources such as air conditioning, libraries and iPads for every student in Grades 3 through 8, CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said.
