Wish Comes True For Local Senior
Published On: Aug 18 2011 12:19:28 PM EDT Updated On: Jul 12 2010 08:13:43 AM EDTIf you had one wish, what would it be?
One New Jersey senior wished to return to the farm where she grew up.
That wish was granted Monday.
Joyce Bohem returned to her roots, the farm where she grew up.
I haven't been at the farm in a long time, said Joyce, 82.
In fact, it's been 62 years..
I'm glad I got that wish, she said.
It was a wish granted by the Lopatcong Care Center's Name a Wish program, a contest the center runs to fulfill the special wishes of its residents.
There's my reservoir, she exclaimed on the drive to the farm.
As the scenery whizzed by the limo window, the memories started to return.
And then....
There it is right there, she said. And there is the house, see? There it is! That's my old farmhouse and it looks just like that picture.
Joyce was home.
Inside were the current homeowner, Hermine Van Doren, and her daughter, Jo-an.
And they had a surprise waiting for Joyce.
Yeah, that's grandma's wedding dress, said Joyce.
Before Joyce's family sold the farm and moved decades ago, her grandmother gave Hermine, who lived nearby, the wedding dress and two bonnets.
Oh look at this, said Joyce. Here goes grandma.
The VanDorens said they had a lot of questions for Joyce about the house.
Were there always four windows on the south side?
Joyce said no.
That house has really changed since we lived there, she said.
It's just a pleasure that she has asked to come back to her home, said Hermine VanDoren.
Joyce said the pleasure was all hers.
I love a farm, said Joyce. I could move back tomorrow. Wouldn't hurt me. I got my wish
