Woman, 89, clings to life after accident
An 89-year-old woman is clinging to life after being run over by a pickup truck on a Walmart parking lot.
Elizabeth Shide was hit around 2 p.m. Tuesday as she left the store on the Allentown Pike in Muhlenberg Twp., Berks Co., police said.
"Apparently, the height of the truck and the height of the woman played a role in not being seen as the woman was crossing in front of the pickup truck," said Ofc. Joel Marino, Muhlenberg Twp. Police Dept.
Investigators said Shide suffered leg injuries when the truck ran over her first with its front wheels, and again with its back wheels.
"It appears as though the driver of the truck may have not put the car in park right away," said Marino.
Loved ones said you could depend on Shide to run errands for other elderly people, take them to doctor's appointments, and even take them to church. Now many are praying for her recovery.
"It was horrible," said Rosemary Benz, a family friend. "I just think of what she went through and how scared she must have been, like, 'Oh my God.'"
"I talked to the Man upstairs," said Tony Benz, a family friend. "Me and Him are on a first-name basis, more or less. I feel very sorry for her."
Many family members spent the evening at Shide's bedside at the Reading Hospital, where they said she is currently in a drug-induced coma due to the extent of her injuries.
"When you love somebody so much, you never think that they're going to be hurt that bad," said Rosemary Benz.
Shide is still listed in critical condition. Police said they have not filed any charges.
"It did not appear that the driver of the truck was reckless. It appeared that it was just a bad accident at this point," said Marino.
