Woman charged in death of baby found in restaurant toilet

EASTON, Pa. - A woman was charged with criminal homicide Monday in the death of a baby whose body was found in a restaurant toilet in Northampton County last week, District Attorney John Morganelli said.

The mother, identified as 26-year-old Amanda Catherine Hein, knew she was pregnant when she went into labor while dining with three other people at Starters Pub on Route 378 in Lower Saucon Township on the night of Aug. 18, Morganelli said.

Hein told police she gave birth to the baby in a bathroom stall inside the restaurant and then put the child in a plastic bag and placed it in the tank of a toilet.

Her friends said she was gone a long time and didn't answer text messages when they began to worry.

"At some point after the expiration of 40 minutes, Hein returned to the table, retrieves her purse and went outside for a smoke," said Morganelli.

None of Hein's companions knew she had been pregnant or what she had done in the bathroom, according to court documents.

A restaurant cleaning crew found the baby's body the next day and alerted authorities, officials said.

"The child was approximately between 33 and 36 weeks gestation," Morganelli said. "The baby was born alive and viable. The cause of death was suffocation, and the manner of death is homicide."

Hein of Allentown, is facing a criminal homicide charge.

"Why she did it, I have no clue," Morganelli said. "I'm looking at what she did."

Authorities are still looking for the baby's father.
