Police searching for suspect after woman killed in Pburg

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. - Investigators in Warren County, New Jersey need your help to track down an alleged killer. Police say a 22-year-old woman was shot to death inside her own home. Now the hunt is on the for the accused trigger-man.

We still don't know who the 22-year-old woman is, police aren't releasing her name until family is notified. But we do know who Phillipsburg Police say took her life, 26-year-old Salim Newton. He's been charged in the homicide, but investigators need your help to get him behind bars.

Officers found the woman dead in her Spruce Alley house just before 11PM Wednesday. Police tell us she died from several gunshot wounds.

"That right there is just outrageous," said neighbor Kayaira Hill. "You never would think something like that would just go on like right here in Phillipsburg."

Investigators haven't released a motive in the shooting, but the suspect lives just blocks away from where the crime happened. Officers spent hours combing the area for evidence. Our cameras were rolling Thursday morning when workers at a nearby pipe company made a surprising discovery.

"We found a gun over in the pipe place," a man yelled.

Police ran over to investigate, but won't say if the weapon is connected to the homicide.

"It's not safe," shared Carmen Serrano. "And I don't feel safe, especially my children."

While some neighbors tell us the fatal shooting has them on edge, others describe the area as quiet and safe. The police chief says they don't see many homicides in Phillipsburg.

"It is rather rare," added Chief James Faulborn. "Our last homicide was January 5th 2012."

Police describe Newton is 6-foot-2 inches tall, and weighs 180-pounds. They say he might be driving an older, full-sized, white SUV with New Jersey Plates. Anyone with information should call Phillipsburg Police at 908-454-1121.
