2017 trial date set for suspects in death of man in Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas - The wheels of justice have nearly ground to a halt in the case of a Berks County man's stabbing death in the Bahamas.

Judge John Isaacs set a trial date of April 24, 2017, for the two suspects, Tyler Valles and Robert Schwarz, both of whom appeared in court in Nassau on Friday, charged with manslaughter in the stabbing death of Carl Yerger, 45, of Ruscombmanor Township, on March 13.

A clerk in Isaacs chambers told 69 News that a backlog of criminal cases in the Bahamas prevents the trial from being held sooner.

In the meantime, Valles, of Key Largo, Florida, and Schwarz, of Gaylordsville, Connecticut, each remain free on $35,000 bail.

The suspects' attorney, Wayne Munroe, has said that Yerger twice trespassed onto his clients' boat, which was docked at the Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina, about 50 miles east of Miami on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

Valles, who picked up a filet knife that was sitting on the dock, was going to get security when a struggle ensued and Yerger, who was also staying at the resort, was stabbed, authorities said.

Yerger served as the president of the Oley Valley Youth League.
