Alvernia professor: Tillerson firing 'a disastrous mistake'

CIA Director Mike Pompeo picked to take his place

READING, Pa. - President Donald Trump on Tuesday fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, saying he and Tillerson have "a different mindset."

The move is causing conversation around the world, according to Tim Blessing, a political analyst and professor at Alvernia University in Reading.f

"From a political point of view, it's a disastrous mistake," said Blessing. "I would love to be listening in on the diplomatic dispatches around the world right now."

The firing comes amid ongoing concerns related to Russia and North Korea, two countries Tillerson cited when he addressed his firing in a statement streamed live on Tuesday afternoon.

"North Korea, without question, is the biggest deal," Blessing told 69 News. "That's been an unstable section of the world since 1950."

Blessing said he believes the move also adds ammunition for the president's critics.

"It reinforces the narrative that the administration is in chaos, that Trump does things impetuously," he explained. "You're losing what appeared to be a key player, or someone who should be a key in the Trump administration."

CIA Director Mike Pompeo has been tapped to replace Tillerson. Blessing said he believes the president will have Pompeo play on his knowledge of North Korea and Russia.

"Pompeo, coming in from the CIA, is up to speed on this, and that's very important for Trump to have," he said.
