Students volunteer time in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

LOWER ALSACE TWP., Pa. - Hundreds of young people in Berks County made the most of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day by serving the community at large.

More than 300 Alvernia University students volunteered their time and service to help area organization in 22 locations throughout the county.

"What we're able to do is provide the manpower to help get some of these projects done," said Jay Worrall, director of The Holleran Center for Community Engagement at Alvernia University in Reading.

"I've actually never have done a day of service before. We're learning how to build a fence. Got to dig holes for the posts and put the bars across blocking off some of the trails that people have made themselves," said Taylor Eichelberger, student.

"Our students really enjoy it and it seems like the more projects our students get involved in, the more likely we will see them at the next project," said Worrall.

"I think we'll make the best of it and have fun with it," said Caitlin Sablich, student.

The day of service, Worrall said, is one of many Alvernia encourages its students to participate in.

Students said volunteering is a great way to team up with organizations committed to positively impacting and reshaping the community.

"It's more than just service. It's to let people know that there's good people out there," said Eichelberger.
