Police investigating man's 'very mysterious' disappearance

AMITY TWP., Pa. - Police in Berks County are investigating the "very mysterious" disappearance of a 65-year-old man.

Robert Kosik hasn't been heard from since June 1, investigators said. He was reported missing by neighbors and family members on June 5.

"It's a mystery," said next-door neighbor Chris Mundell.

Kosik, a Vietnam veteran who reportedly lived alone, left his home on Sunset Drive in the Bel Air Estates mobile home park without any personal items, police said.

"His vehicle was still there, his car keys were still there, his cell phone was still there. It's very odd," said Detective Jeffrey Smith, Amity Township Police Department.

Smith said the front door was open but entry wasn't forced. He said a pet cat was inside and the television was on.

"Nothing appeared disturbed, nothing out of the ordinary," said Smith, adding that police do not believe the disappearance is criminal in nature.

Police said officers were assisted Monday by the Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale K-9 Search and Rescue Team to search the rural area surrounding Kosik's home, but nothing turned up.

"His house is surrounded by woods and they weren't able to come up with a scent or anything, so we're again back to square one," said Smith.

"He just disappeared. I have no idea where he's at. Nobody knows where he's at," said Mundell, whose husband is Kosik's landlord. "We have no idea what happened to him."

Mundell said her husband spoke with Kosik two weeks ago, and the vet appeared in high spirits, despite becoming recently unemployed.

She said Kosik has no family in the nearby area, and he would normally alert them if planning to leave for an extended period of time.

"Usually when he left somewhere he'd tell my husband to take care of his cat, because he loved his cat," she said. "I'm worried. He's a nice man and I don't want anything happening to him."

Kosik is described as being 5 feet, 6 inches tall and about 160 pounds with gray hair and a long goatee. Police said he reportedly walks with a limp and may be a diabetic.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Amity Township Police Department at 610-689-6002.
