READING, Pa. - Police have identified a suspect in the deadly shooting of a man in the Glenside neighborhood of northwest Reading over the weekend.
A warrant was issued Monday afternoon for the arrest of Anthony David Alvarez.
Alvarez, 22, of the 100 block of North Third Street in Reading, is facing criminal homicide charges for allegedly killing Joseph "Sonny" Torres outside his ex-girlfriend's apartment on Avenue D early Saturday morning.
"I hear somebody was arguing and two minutes after that I heard the gunshot," said Xiomara Martinez, who lives across the street from where the shooting happened.
On Monday, a memorial sat close to the scene where Torres was shot.
He was at his ex-girlfriend's apartment with his three young kids.
According to court documents, Torres went out with some friends and when he came home Alvarez and another man stopped over.
An argument erupted inside between Alvarez and a girl over $20.
Torres was trying to calm the situation.
The men went outside to smoke a cigarette, and that is when Torres was shot.
He managed to tell paramedics who pulled the trigger, but he died during surgery at Reading Hospital, said police.
"If it's going to keep happening like this I mean I'm planning to move somewhere safe, maybe the countryside," said Melady Avalos, who lives across the way.
It turns out another man was shot about a block away on a crowded playground three years ago.
Now, parents want police to increase patrols.
"Summer is coming and the kids want to be playing outside so I want it to feel safe for me and the kids," said Martinez.
Alvarez is described by police as a Hispanic man who stands approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a thin build.
He was last seen with his hair in a ponytail.
Anyone with information that can help police find Alvarez is asked to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
A cash reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
