Around a burger or straight up, Fastnacht Day a hit in Berks

BOYERTOWN, Pa. - No matter how many decades go by, fastnachts seem to stick around, and stick to plates, for that matter, depending on how much turkey syrup you use.

"My mother used to make fastnachts a long, long time ago," said Muhlenberg Township resident Stu Degler.

"It's a tradition," said Mike Spagnolian of Norristown, Montgomery County. "I guess you just have to do it, keep it alive."

Fastnacht Day on Tuesday was being enjoyed in Berks County and beyond. Many varieties have been available at Dutch-Maid Bakery in Muhlenberg Township.

"It's been going very well today. It's been very busy," said bakery manager Edward Johnson.

At Fegely's Reading Diner inside the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, they took customers back to 1938, serving fastnachts for a quarter and coffees for a nickel.

"I'm a cheap date," said Spagnolian with a chuckle.

And for fastnacht lovers who just need more, there's the fastnacht burger, served at multiple Klinger's Pubs' locations in Berks County. The restaurant slices the fastnacht in half, grills it up, then puts a juicy burger, an egg, bacon and cheese in between, with syrup on the side.

Degler was one of the first to enjoy it Tuesday.

"It was good, very good," said Degler. "A tad messy, as you can tell. A little messy with the syrup."

Klinger's at the Airport in Bern Township and Klinger's on Carsonia in Lower Alsace Township will have the fastnacht burger on their menus for the rest of the week.
