Ashley's Angels making Christmas miracles in Berks

Helping more than 200 kids this Christmas.

ONTELAUNEE TWP., Pa - Christmas just got a little brighter for hundreds of children and their families in Berks County, and it's all thanks to some angels.

Employees with Ashley Furniture in Ontelaunee Township partnered with 12 school districts in Berks County to nominate families who have fallen on hard times to bring home some presents for their kids, as well as food and clothing.

This year, the program, known as Ashley's Angels, is helping more than 200 kids.

"I certainly wasn't expecting anything, so when I got a call from the school last week, I was ecstatic," said Stacey McDonald, whose children are in the Exeter Township School District.

That call brought the true spirit of the season to life for dozens of families.

"I actually told [the school] that they could pick someone who needed it more, and they wanted to do it even more for us," said Jessica Schwartz, whose kids are also in the Exeter Township School District.

"I've had some housing issues and the school knows, so they've helped me out this Christmas. I'm technically homeless," said Melanie Forrest, whose kids are in the Reading School District.

Forrest said seeing her children happy on Christmas morning means everything.

"It means the world, because it was going to be a rough one this year. I just switched jobs, so I only got one check before Christmas, so this really helps me out," added Forrest.
