Baby's family seeks privacy as parents await court hearing
6-month-old Harper's body found in apartment
SPRING TWP., Pa. - Family members of a baby found dead inside her parents' apartment in Berks County earlier this week released the following statement through their attorney on Friday.
"The family is currently working diligently to make the necessary arrangements for the children involved. Throughout this process, we will continue to be the voice that baby Harper truly deserves. But, at this time, we ask everyone to please respect the privacy of the family."
Spring Township police said it was a tip from relatives of the baby's father that led them to discover 6-month-old Harper's body early Tuesday morning. She had been placed in a trash bag, concealed in a container of cat litter, and hidden in a crawl space of the apartment at 1350 West Wyomissing Court, authorities said.
An autopsy was done Thursday, but the coroner is holding off on issuing a ruling in the baby's death until the report is complete.
In the meantime, Harper's parents, Shaun Oxenreider and Samantha Trump, are facing charges of concealing the death of a child, abuse of a corpse, and criminal conspiracy. Police said more charges are possible pending the outcome of the baby's autopsy.
Oxenreider is in the Berks County Jail on $250,000 bail. He's due in court for a preliminary hearing on April 10. Trump, who is pregnant, remains hospitalized for treatment of a seizure she suffered when police showed up at her apartment late Monday night, officials said.
