Bad gas: Drivers fill up, then break down on I-78

'Everything lit up like Christmas'

WEISENBERG TWP., Pa. - Drivers refueling their cars at the Bandit Truck Stop off Interstate 78, near border between Berks and Lehigh counties, didn't make it far from the pump, thanks to what the gas station called bad gasoline.

"As soon as I got down off of the ramp, my car shut off and started sputtering," said Tyrone Freeman from Pittsburgh.

It was the same deal for Mark Komal of New Jersey.

"Just my routine trip. I'm heading down to Maryland," Komal explained. "Next thing you know, the RPM is sputtering and everything lit up like Christmas."

Then, there was the treacherous trek back to the gas station in Weisenberg Township to get answers.

"Took me about 20 minutes to walk this highway, which is really dangerous," Freeman explained.

A Sunoco manager told 69 News that the company is working to fix the problem, but the manager said he believes a faulty cap allowed water to seep into the supply of "super" and "plus" gasoline. Crews have been called to make repairs.

"I gotta take it to the dealership and find out what the damage is," Komal said.

According to a mechanic 69 News spoke with, the entire fuel system could need to be replaced, depending on your vehicle.

All in all, the incident made for a rough start to the week for some drivers.

"I need to get to work, first of all," said Komal. "Car is almost paid for. I hope it's not destroyed.

The Sunoco station said it is cooperating fully with customers who have been impacted by this, offering to cover any repairs.
