BCIU stresses school safety in meeting with commissioners

READING, Pa. - The Berks County Intermediate Unit is working with law enforcement officers and the 18 school districts in the county to prepare for the unthinkable.

BCIU officials talked about efforts to keep kids safe in school at the Berks County Commissioners meeting on Thursday.

"People are actively engaged behind the scenes preparing for these type of events. You don't often see that. You walk into a classroom, walk into a school, you won't see these events happening, but I think people should rest assured that a lot of planning, a lot of training goes on," said John George, executive director, BCIU.

Officials said there needs to be clear communication between school districts and law enforcers.

They are also making sure teachers and students in classrooms know what to do during an emergency.
