Beach at Blue Marsh Lake reopens to swimmers

BERN TWP., Pa. - Blue Marsh Lake in Berks County is welcoming swimmers back to the beach.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced Wednesday afternoon that bacteria levels at the lake have fallen below harmful levels, allowing rangers to reopen the swimming area in Bern Township around 1 p.m.

Swimming at the beach had been off limits since this past weekend, when levels of high bacteria were found in the water. Officials said the problem was likely the result of last week's rainy weather combined with an increased presence of Canada geese.

All of the lake's other recreation areas, including boat launches, hiking trails and picnic areas, remained open to visitors during the beach closure.
