Benefit honors Berks County murder victims

Fundraiser for victims

WEST LAWN, Pa. - Last summer, police in Sinking Spring found Megan Short dead next to her three children in an apparent murder-suicide.

Investigators later revealed Mark Short, Megan's husband and the father of all three children, shot and killed his family before turning the gun on himself.

Saturday, area girl scouts hosted a special event in memory of the family at the United Methodist Church in West Lawn.

"We are having a blood drive and Be the Match event in honor of Megan, Liana, MJ and Willow, the Short family that was murdered last August," said Letitia McCrae.

Liana Short was part of this girl scoot troop, and Megan was one of the founding parents of the troop.

"Megan and her three children were a beautiful family and we are just so happy that we got to know them and share our lives with them.  We just hope that they are shining down on us, helping us protect us guide us," said McCrae.

The loss of one of their very good friends has not been easy for many of these young scouts.

"She really loved making a difference in the community," said Madison McCrae, a girl scout and friend to Liana.

But instead of focusing on being sad these girls have decided to remember the fun times they had with Liana.

"One time we went to the highlands and we made gingerbread houses and sang and danced for them and the whole time Liana was smiling and she was having a great time," Madison said.

In addition to the blood drive, the girl scouts are also raising money for a scholarship fund that will allow girls to go to camp for free.

"Unfortunately Liana will not be going to camp in her lifetime so this is kind of a nice thing that in her memory every year someone is going to get to go to camp in her memory," said Jennifer Dumas.

It's something these scouts and leaders hope will help keep this family forever alive in their hearts.

We just feel their loss every day. There is not a day that goes by where we don't think about them" said McCrae.
