Berks congressman travels with president on Air Force One

US Rep. Smucker: 'I greatly appreciate invitation'

WASHINGTON - President Trump didn't end up in Berks County on Wednesday, but a member of the county's congressional delegation accompanied him on his trip to Pennsylvania.

Republican U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker, who represents the state's 16th District, said he was invited by the president to travel with him aboard Air Force One from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to Harrisburg International Airport in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County.

The president went there to promote his tax plan in a speech that was streamed live on

"I greatly appreciate invitation from @realDonaldTrump to attend," Smucker said in a post on Twitter. "We need more honest, simpler tax code to create more opportunity for all."

At least one other Pennsylvania congressman joined the president during his visit. U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, who is running for the U.S. Senate, said he is proud to stand with President Trump "to demand that Congress cut taxes for everyone and deliver on its promises to the American worker."

The rally included a special emphasis on how tax reform will benefit the American trucking industry and create jobs for American workers.

In announcing the trip last Friday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Trump would visit Hamburg, triggering a flurry of excitement among the northern Berks County borough's residents and business owners.

Sanders' office later corrected the statement to say that the president's destination would actually be Harrisburg.
