Berks couple running marathon get surprise at finish line

'I couldn't have been more ecstatic'

EASTON, Pa. - A Berks County couple got a big surprise after crossing the Via Marathon finish line in Easton on Sunday.

As if training to run 26.2 miles wasn't hard enough, Alysha and Brian Flynn crossed the finish line as a family of three.

The Mertztown couple celebrated the end of the race by learning the gender of their second child. Blue balloons greeted the Flynns as they neared the end of the race.

"I was telling myself when I was coming to the finish line and saw it was a boy, I couldn't have been more ecstatic. Tears coming down. It was amazing," Brian Flynn said.

Family and friends were also there to help celebrate. It was Alysha's eighth marathon and her first full marathon as an expectant mother.

"I was surprised, because we both bet as we were crossing the finish line that it was going to be a girl, and then we found it it was going to be a boy. That was pretty awesome," she said.

She said she ran multiple half-marathons when she was pregnant with her first child.

Flynn said she trains differently when she is pregnant but said running for two didn't slow her down.

"I wasn't worried. She's an amazing athlete, has been her whole life. If anything, she was probably more worried about me getting to the finish than anyone," Brian said.
