Berks' first Popeyes restaurant taking shape in Muhlenberg

Popeyes being built in Plaza 222 shopping center

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - Berks County's first Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is quickly taking shape.

Much of the framing for the new restaurant off the Fifth Street Highway in Muhlenberg Township has already been completed.

Popeyes is being built in the Plaza 222 shopping center, on the site of the former Eric Theater, which was torn down over the summer.

Popeyes will certainly have some competition in the area. The same stretch of the Fifth Street Highway is already home to several fast-food restaurants, including two that are also known for their fried chicken -- KFC and Bojangles.

Popeyes, founded in a New Orleans suburb in 1972, was bought earlier this year by Restaurant Brands, the parent company of Burger King and Tim Hortons.

Popeyes has more than 2,600 restaurants around the world, with its closest one to Berks being located in Pottstown.
