Berks group postpones trip to hurricane-ravaged Haiti

SPRING TWP., Pa. - A Berks County church has decided to postpone its upcoming missionary trip to hurricane-ravaged Haiti.

West Lawn United Methodist Church in Spring Township had planned before Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti to send eight volunteers to the island nation this weekend.

As a result of the widespread devastation caused by the storm, however, the church said it is rescheduling the trip for most likely November.

"We pray for all of those affected by the destruction and aftermath of hurricane Matthew," the church said in a post on its Facebook page Friday morning.

It's not the first time the church has sent help to Haiti. Through a partnership with Divine Ministries, the volunteers have helped hundreds of kids in children's homes since before the earthquake struck in 2010.

The church volunteers also build houses for Haitian families.

Three days after the storm rampaged across the country's remote southwestern peninsula, authorities and aid workers still lack a clear picture of what they fear is the country's biggest disaster in years.

As of Friday afternoon, the death toll in Haiti was reported to be at least 842, according to Reuters.
