Pennsylvania Representative Tom Caltagirone of Reading is urging the House Education Committee to act immediately on "Eileen's Law."
It's legislation Caltagirone, a Democrat, and Representative Mark Gillen, a Republican, introduced that would change the way people are penalized in truancy cases.
"Prisons were meant for hardcore criminals, not mothers with kids that don't want to go to school," said Caltagirone.
The bill is named in honor of Eileen Dinino of Reading. She died in the Berks County Jail earlier this month. She was behind bars because she couldn't pay fines stemming from her children's truancy cases.
