Berks woman accused of wounding toddler with scissors

20-month-old boy now in care of family members

READING, Pa. - An investigation of alleged child abuse has led to the arrest of a Berks County woman.

Ashley Marie Kase, 23, was taken into custody at her workplace on Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.

Detectives with the Berks County district attorney's office said they began their investigation of Kase on January 24, when they learned of a 20-month-old boy being taken to Ephrata Hospital in Lancaster County for treatment of a laceration.

Kase, 23, of Caernarvon Township, subsequently admitted to grabbing a pair of scissors while changing the toddler's diaper and intentionally causing the injury, investigators said.

Kase was committed to the Berks County Jail on $200,000 bail.

The toddler was later transferred to Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center for further treatment before being released to the care of family members.
