READING, Pa. - A grand jury investigation has resulted in the arrest of a Berks County woman in the death of her foster son more than two years ago.

Shawna Marie Moore was charged Friday with third-degree murder and endangering the welfare of children.

The charges stem from the April 14, 2015, death of 2-year-old Cameron Michael, who suffered a severe brain injury a week earlier at the family's home on Hipple Lane in Tulpehocken Township, according to Berks County District Attorney John Adams.

Moore called 911 for an ambulance, telling dispatchers that the boy had fallen down the steps, authorities said.

Paramedics arrived about 20 minutes later to find him unresponsive. They rushed him to Reading Hospital, where doctors performed a craniotomy to relieve pressure on the boy's brain, according to court documents.

Further examination of the child and an investigation by Pennsylvania State Police determined that the boy's injuries could not have been caused by a fall down the stairs. Instead, they said, the injuries were consistent with a whiplash-like motion and a blunt strike of the child's head.

Moore, 31, was committed to the Berks County Jail without bail. She's due back in court for a preliminary hearing on December 13.
