Body found off Route 12 in Reading

Body found off bypass; possible homicide, police say

READING, Pa. - Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found off the Warren Street Bypass in Reading.

A motorist discovered the Latino man's body alongside the ramp from the westbound side of the highway, also known as Route 12, to River Road in the Riverdale section of the city shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

The victim suffered trauma to his body, said police, who are treating his death as a homicide.

"Oh my God who is it?" asked Richard Moore, who owns a business just down the road. "There's some neighbors I know back here, real nice neighbors, but that's bad."

Reading police Chief Bill Heim and Berks County District Attorney John Adams were among the officials on the scene as detectives combed for clues, trying to determine who the man is and how he ended up in the grass along the edge of the road, but so far, they don't have much to go on.

"Because of the location, there's major thoroughfares around that location that we need to look at every possibility where the vehicles may have come from or went to," said Capt. Damond Kloc, Reading Police Dept.

Investigators could be seen on the ground taking measurements, snapping photos and combing through the brush for evidence.

"We hope to get some additional information, maybe someone who may know something out there in the public," said Kloc.

Tom Heckman, who lives just down the road, told police he heard four gunshots last week, and now he's left wondering if there's any connection.

"We've had gunshots here before, but it is unsettling," Heckman said.

Police are trying to see if there is surveillance video in the area to help them determine how the body got there.

An autopsy on the victim is scheduled for Thursday.
