READING, Pa. - A homeless shelter in Reading is going green.
A crane and some dedicated volunteers put a solar thermal hot water unit on the roof of the Opportunity House on North Second Street on Thursday.
The device, donated by the Kutztown-based Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Association, will heat the water in the building, cutting gas consumption in half.
"In the wintertime, they'll bring homeless individuals in off the streets, give them a hot shower, a meal and a bed, so providing some free hot water for the community is an essential function," said Tom Green, Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Association. "It's a great thing."
A grant from the Berks County Community Foundation helped pay for the unit. It should be installed in the next few months.
