Burglar targets Sinking Spring shopping center

SINKING SPRING, Pa. - Police are asking for the public's help in finding a crowbar-wielding crook who burglarized several businesses in one Berks County community.

On Tuesday police released surveillance photographs of the criminal, carrying a crowbar through Edible Arrangements, located in the Spring Market shopping center in the 3500 block of Penn Avenue in Sinking Spring.

"We're not done figuring out the cost of all the damage, but we're into the thousands already," said Michael Savino, owner of Edible Arrangements.

Police say the criminal broke in through the back door of the business around 3 a.m., Friday, March 4.

Dream Garden, a Chinese restaurant next door, was also burglarized around the same time.

The owner, Amy Wu, says replacing the heavy-duty lock to the back door of her business will cost more than $1,000.

"At nighttime, we don't have nothing here, people always pay with credit card," said Wu.

Police are investigating whether these break-ins are related to a robbery next door at Family Dollar just two weeks ago.

Detectives say these types of crimes are rare for quiet Sinking Spring.

"I can't even tell you how many we've had in the past 10 years. But it's minimal," said officer James Oxenrider, Sinking Spring Police Dept.

Several customers' checks and some petty cash were stolen from Edible Arrangements, the owner said.

The owners of Dream Garden say the burglar got away with only $9.
