Businesses on closed stretch of Route 422: We 'remain open'

Sinkhole may keep road closed until Thanksgiving

SOUTH LONDONDERRY TWP., Pa. - At least two businesses along a closed stretch of Route 422 in Lebanon County have a message for their customers.

"Palmyra Bowling and The Sinkhole Saloon will continue to be open our regular business hours," the bowling center posted on its website.

A growing sinkhole forced PennDOT on Tuesday afternoon to close Route 422 in both directions between Plaza Drive and Apple Bloosom Road in South Londonderry Township, just outside Palmyra.

"Customers for both businesses will need to use the back entrance on Plaza Drive," the bowling center said in its post, which also includes a detour map.

The closure has also forced Lebanon Transit to alter two of its bus routes. Information about those detours can be found on the agency's website.

Route 422, which serves as a primary artery between Reading and the Hershey/Harrisburg area, could remain closed until Thanksgiving, according to PennDOT, which was in the process of hiring a contractor to excavate the sinkhole and make repairs.

In the meantime, signs advise motorists to use Routes 117, 322, and 934 as a detour route.
