Ceremony celebrates Schuylkill River Trail bridge project

UNION TWP., Pa. - A ceremony on Saturday celebrated the initiation of a planned recreation trail bridge project in Berks County.

The bridge will carry the Schuylkill River Trail over Route 724 in Union Township. It will be named in honor of the late Dr. Richard Whittaker, whose wife donated money to the project as a way of honoring her husband.

Various grants are covering the remaining cost.

Officials with Schuylkill River Greenways NHA said they anticipate the $1-million project will be completed by the end of 2019.
