Ceremony Honors Fallen Deputy; K9 Partner Officially Retired

READING, Pa. - A ceremony on Thursday paid tribute to a fallen sheriff's deputy and his K9 partner.

Berks County Sheriff's Deputy Kyle Pagerly, who died in the line of duty last month, was awarded the department's Medal of Honor, a unit citation and a pair of honorable service citations during the ceremony in the Berks County Services Center.

Pagerly's widow, Alecia, accepted the awards on her husband's behalf.

"I can't even believe everything Kyle got today," said Alecia, who was also presented with a plaque from the Military Order of the Purple Heart and a memorial Bible from the International Conference of Police Chaplains.

Pagerly's K9 partner, Jynx, was also officially retired from service. He will continue to live with Alecia, who is expecting the couple's first child in January.

"Jynx was part of their family, and being part of their family, Alecia lost her husband, Deputy Pagerly, and I could not take another part of their family away from them," said Sheriff Eric Weaknecht. "I told her that evening that Jynx will be hers."

Weaknecht said Jynx has retired from the force with full benefits. His medical care, grooming, boarding and food have all been donated for the rest of his life.

Other donations for the Pagerly family have been pouring in from various fundraisers that have been held in recent weeks.

One event is taking place at the Texas Roadhouse in Spring Township. The restaurant, which has been collecting diapers for Alecia's unborn child for the past week, will donate 10 percent of all food purchases on Thursday to the Pagerly family.

Local firefighters will also be on hand to display their trucks and raffle off prizes. Pagerly was a volunteer lieutenant with the Spring Township Fire Department.
