MAIDENCREEK TWP., Pa. - Police and prosecutors are pressing charges against a tractor trailer driver for causing the worst accident officers said they have ever seen on Route 222.
During the morning hours of Oct. 22, 2012, Lauren Boyer was on her way to work at Bob Fisher Chevrolet when she was killed in a horrific accident.
Police said a tractor trailer was traveling south on Route 222 in Maidencreek Twp., Berks Co., around 6:30 a.m. when it smashed into a pickup, pushing it off the road. The semi then made impact with Boyer's SUV, flipping it over. The force was so strong it caused a five-vehicle pileup.
"There is really no legitimate reason why a line of traffic in front of you stops and you do not even touch the brake until after the initial impact," said Chief Scott Eaken, Northern Berks Regional Police Dept.
That is why the district attorney's office pressed charges against the driver of the semi. Emilio Perez-Pazmino. But officials said the problem goes beyond this accident. There are hundreds of accidents on Route 222, and officials want PennDOT to make changes.
"PennDOT is doing a lot of talk and no action about getting something done on that highway. We are all in favor of it," said Eaken.
"This roadway is a problem and needs to be corrected before other innocent lives are lost," said Berks County District Attorney John Adams.
PennDOT said it is looking at putting roundabouts on Route 222 at the intersections with Route 73, Tamarack Boulevard and Route 662 to help relieve the congestion in that area. It is not looking at widening the road at this time.
Until safety improvements are made, officials said the road will continue being congested and they need drivers to be more aware.
"I cannot express enough that we need to use caution when traveling on Route 222 in this area of our county," said Adams.
The driver of the semi is being charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, careless driving and other related charges. The DA's office expects him to voluntarily turn himself in by Tuesday.
