Charges withdrawn for man arrested in 2015 homicide

Eyewitness recanted ID of suspect, officials say

READING, Pa. - Berks County prosecutors have withdrawn murder charges against a man arrested by police in the killing of another man in Reading.

Michael Anjelo Maldonado-Caballero had been charged with first- and third-degree murder and aggravated assault in the fatal shooting of Douglas Hanson Thorton Jr. in the 100 block of South Sixth Street on December 26, 2015.

Police said the two men were arguing when Maldonado-Caballero pulled out a gun and fired several shots at Thorton, but one eyewitness in the case has recanted the identification of Maldonado-Caballero and another is refusing to cooperate with investigators, according to prosecutors.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams initially credited the eyewitnesses for helping police to make a quick arrest in the case.

Adams told 69 News that he will need more evidence before deciding whether to re-file charges in the case.
